The Blank Canvass of Life – Can We Engineer Divinity?

Jason Silva’s latest Shot of awe explores the concept of engineering your own divinity. The idea is that life is a blank canvass, and the surroundings in which we choose to exist can and does affect our mental and emotional states. It’s like a feedback loop where our mind creates an atmosphere or environment which then turns around and alters our mode of thought resulting in continued evolution down manufactured emotional and mental canals.

Those spaces we built, “the architectures of happiness” as Alain de Botton writes, the spaces we create inform, shape, sculpt our subjective experience…. we script intention into our designs and those designs in turn script our subjective experience.

This is a great concept to take to heart. Our ability to create the world we want to live in is very real. I follow this philosophy as a general guideline to help manufacture serendipity and inspiration into my own life.

As Terrence McKenna so poignantly states, “We are living in the condensation of our imaginations”

Over 100,000 People Enlist to Colonize Mars

A group over 100,000 people have submitted applications for a one-way trip to colonize Mars in 2022.This means that they are willing to forfeit everything that they know and love for a chance to be the first humans to travel to and cosmoscolonize an alien planet.

There’s something in that concept that’s majestic and kind of poetic, in a way that they are writing human history and taking huge risks to do so. Mars One is behind the project, and when asked on their FAQ, “Why go to Mars?” they responded as follows.

Why did Columbus travel west? Why did Marco Polo head east? Because it is that pull, that unknown, that prospect of adventure that compels humans to seek new frontiers to explore.

It does seem a part of the human condition to explore the unknown, and there are certainly viable reasons for expanding human life to other planetary bodies, but is it even possible, and will Mars One actually be able to pay for such a mission?

The not-for-profit organization plans to fund the $6 billion mission “by making it the biggest media spectacle in history”. This includes reality shows that will follow the astronauts’ eight year training that will teach them medical Mars Oneprocedures, construction and repair, and gardening techniques among many other necessary skills.

These shows will continue as the explorers land and begin developing a livable habitat. I would certainly watch that over the reality t.v. that is currently available, but I’m doubtful that it would be enough to fund the mission. They do have other sources from donations, merchandise sales, application fees, investors, and so on, but let’s just hope that it is enough to get this idea off of the ground.

There are other companies and even universities that are working on similar concepts. Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX has mentioned future plans for “Martian bases” and has already made significant progress in private spaceflight.

Would you sign-up to colonize Mars? If the answer is yes, sign-up, applications are still being taken.

Pale Blue Dot – Carl Sagan

This video to the voice of Carl Sagan explores the vastness of space in comparison to the relative insignificant size of this pale blue dot called Earth. Sagan continues to illustrate the beauty and importance of the pale blue dot through the movements of life.

This dot is the only known vessel for life that is known in this universe, and that fact alone inspires pride and respect for our home… however long we may stay here.

The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Thick of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors, so that in glory and triumph they could become the momentary masters of a fragment of a dot.

Charlie Chaplin – The Greatest Speech Ever Made

In this speech from The Great Dictator, Charlie Chaplin encompasses the goodness of humanity. In what is truly the greatest speech ever, Chapman incites feelings of unity, compassion, and altruism in a way that gives you an intense jolt of hope.

We all want to help one another. Human beings are like that. We want to live by each other’s happiness — not by each other’s misery.

I truly believe this speech can affect everyone in a positive way.

If you enjoyed this as much as I did, share it with those you love and spread the happiness. This kind of feeling can be infectious and bring someone a brief moment of beauty.

The Singularity -The Inexplicable Future of Humans and Technology

The singularity is a term borrowed from physics by Google’s chief engineer, Ray Kurzweil. The meaning in physics relates to the point inside of a black hole at which the laws of physics have completely broken down. Kurzweil’s definition refers to a point in the future at which technology has increased to such a high level that it is not possible to perceive a difference between technology and humanity.

Imagine a time in the future that has changed so much that, like physical laws in a black hole, life as we know it to be ceases to exist, and life begins anew in a completely different context. This is similar to the point in our evolution when language developed… try explaining to a non-lingual, pre-human the verses of Shakespeare, or the verses of Jay-Z for that matter.

The life expectancy was 20, 1,000 years ago, we doubled it in 200 years. This will go into high gear within 10 and 20 years from now, probably less than 15, we will be reaching that tipping point where we add more time than has gone by because of scientific progress.”…Based on conservative estimates of the amount of computation you need to functionally simulate a human brain, we’ll be able to expand the scope of our intelligence a billion-fold.” – Ray Kurzweil

Beginning is Near

The most amazing part is the time-frame that is projected. By Kurzweil’s estimates based on the exponential leaps shown by Moore’s Law, we may reach this tech-haven by 2045. So that’s all there is to it… hold on for 32 more years and it’s all virtual reality gravy. I’ll leave you with this by Friedrich Nietzsche…

“Man is something that shall be overcome…. Man is a rope, tied between beast and overman — a rope over an abyss… What is great in man is that he is a bridge and not an end.”

Life as a Hero’s Journey

This latest Shot of Awe from Jason Silva ties into a recent theme on this site of creating your own reality, following your inspiration, and spreading the resulting positivity.

This video describes living your life as a hero’s journey, or being the protagonist in your life and actively enriching the narrative. These concepts symbolize the process of reflecting inward to discover yourself and your passion, and then being active in pursuing that with as much vigor as you can afford.

Life exists in individual moments, and it is up to us to make sure that those moments are vast, interconnected, and grand… [Doing so] to make a masterpiece out of life, one that we would willingly live again and again for all of eternity, this is what we can strive for.

Thanks for watching, and remember…

Follow your bliss and the universe will open doors for you where there were only walls.

Jim Carrey on the Power of Thought and Positive Intent

A very introspective Jim Carrey speaks at  the 2009 Inaugural GATE Event (Global Alliance for Transformational Entertainment) on how a drastic change of perspective taught him about the human connection, the power of thought, and positive intent.

I saw that I was bigger than what I do, I was bigger than my body. I was everything and everyone… I was no longer a fragment of the universe, I was the universe.

GATE is a group that basically wants everyone in the entertainment industry to go through a transformation similar to the one Jim Carrey went through. The purpose of this is to change the entertainment industry into projecting content that doesn’t make us think the world is a sick sad place.

Maybe one day it won’t be so depressing to watch the news.

the birth of the GATE movement, recognizing the role that entertainment and media plays in projecting our reality, and supporting the transformation of these industries in order to make those projections more positive and life enhancing.

A Disabled Veteran’s Second First Steps… Truly Inspirational Yoga Transformation

Arthur Boorman was a Gulf-War paratrooper; a veteran disabled from too many hard landings. This is among the most beautiful and inspiring videos that I’ve come across. Arthur tries to regain control of his life through yoga after being told he would never again be able to walk unassisted.

I rediscovered this today, and I feel enriched every time I see it. You see so much pain and strength and positivity in this video that it makes you yearn to be half as inspired and to have half the will power.  This goes to show how much power an individual can have. It began with a choice, and now his life is changed forever, and his story has touched millions.

The great thing about this video is that it doesn’t pertain to exercise or yoga or fitness exclusively.

This is a video about inner power. The power of will, dedication, persistence and mostly the power of positivity.

Chase the good in your life. Follow the things in life that make you smile and give you energy. Pursue your happiness and you will dwell within it.
